An Absent Glance…and We Remember

Several years ago my dad decided to scrap out some old gold jewelry my mom wasn’t wearing anymore.  It was a mish-mash of charms, chains, and a few other odds and ends that are common in women’s jewelry boxes and dresser drawers.

There was a Lady Bug charm in the mix that I decided to hold back for no particular reason.  My intent was to return it to him so he could give it to my mom as a random Christmas gift she wouldn’t expect. (The ultimate re-gift.)

I pictured her laughing in her puzzled way as she opened the box.  And then a warm understanding smile would come across her face, followed by her little laugh.  And then…it would be Christmas.

That memory never happened because I let too many days go by, and never gave my dad the charm back.

My mom died earlier this year, and the moment and memories that could have been, won’t be.

As I think about what might I have been, I am reminded again how important jewelry is in this world, in our lives, and in our memories.

It’s related to my business of course, but over the years I’ve come to appreciate what fine jewelry actually is.

Fine jewelry is the most powerful gift you can give to the people you care about.

I miss my mom, and I missed the chance to do something special for my parents, and quite possibly the rest of my family.

I guess what I’m saying is, “Don’t wait to give that special someone, that something special.”

Jewelry is treasure.

It is connections from then, to now, and what will be.

It helps us tell the story of our life, even though  many of the details fade from memory.

It’s a funny thing isn’t it?  Specific details can be hard to remember…but the feelings from magic moments can bubble up in a heartbeat.

An absent glance at a special lady bug charm can do that.  (And I am thankful for it.)

Merry Christmas everyone!  And thank you for being our clients and friends.

All the best,

Andy Koehn
