The Expert That Wasn’t…

Last month my wife Jenn took her bi-yearly dip in the “Let’s shop for different health insurance,” pool.  

She started where the rest of us do: online. (Cue ominous music.)

If you’re like the rest of us, these visits in cyber-space oftentimes end with more questions than answers.  There is too much information, too many choices, and too many pop-up ads that pretend to be useful information.   It can be a huge time suck…and it was. 

Next step: Ask for help.

After several days of on-again, off-again research, Jenn decided it was to ask for help from someone on the inside.  Someone who could make sense of this for us, and then sell us on a program that would save us money, or give us better coverage.  (Preferably both.)

She asked around, got the name of a guy, and gave him a call. (I know, right? She went all old school and picked up the phone!  She’s a rebel that one.) 

He was nice enough, and offered some real hope when he sent a questionnaire for Jenn to fill out.  He said it would help him give us “…the best possible service.”  

She gathered the information and emailed it back to him with a feeling of relief.  We had “a guy” now, and he was going to guide us through the murky waters of a much needed but confusing product, so it felt good. 

But he failed. 

A few days later she got an email back from him.  She was ready to put this insurance thing to bed and move on to bigger and better things, like interviewing designers and consulting with clients.  

Unfortunately that didn’t happen. 

When she opened his email she found 24 attachments of health plans, and a bunch of links for more information.  Gah!   

More information is the last thing she wanted from our guy.  What she wanted was someone “in the business” to lead us to the health insurance promised land.  Our guy failed us.  It was drag.
