Breast Cancer Awareness Month: It’s Personal, and I’m Finally Doing Something About It

warholed me actually round

I’m sure you know that October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  For many people the spirit of BC Awareness is one of support, courage and hope…and rightly so.  It does save lives.  It does help people living with breast cancer feel less alone, and it does give hope.  It does matter.

But for me, it’s also a reminder of a very sad time in my family’s life.  What most of you don’t know is that my first wife, Laura, died after a short battle with breast cancer, leaving me and our 4 children alone…shell shocked…and indescribably sad.  There was no happy ending for us…no outstretched arms or a hopeful future like it is for so many.  It was about a loss…and starting over with heavy hearts, and a numbing background question that will never be fully answered: “How could this happen to us?”

I have mostly avoided overt support of BC Awareness Month since Laura died, or rather…I ignored it.  I simply didn’t want to go back to that world…even if it was only in my head.  (That sounds rather self-centered doesn’t it?  I suppose it is…but it’s also accurate.)

This year is different.  I believe it’s time for me to do more to honor the people who have been a part of the BC world…or are…or will be.  I can’t help but think that I’ve been doing a disservice to Laura’s memory, and the BC community at large by doing little to nothing in terms of “participating” in Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

While Koehn & Koehn has quietly supported a few of our brands BC promotional activities over the years, we’ve never fully jumped in.   That ends with this post…and begins with something I’d like to introduce to you now.

It’s called Rhythm of Life…and I am truly proud to have it in our store as a way to honor and help people whose lives have been touched (or crushed) by Breast Cancer.  A portion of every sale will be donated to The National Breast Cancer Foundation to provide help and inspire hope to those affected by this scary disease.

Each pendant has a moving diamond or gemstone that is powered by her heartbeat, and all six(6) are presented below.  Take a look!  (Click here to see and buy them on our Facebook page if you like what you see!)

I hope you’re as excited as I am about the Rhythm of Life Collection.  They are beautiful.  Not only because of the moving diamonds, gemstones, and the precious metals…but also because of what they represent.  They are a truly wonderful way for you and I to help the scared, lonely, and courageous individuals and families that must deal with a Breast Cancer diagnosis and all that follows.  Happy ending or not…it does matter.

As usual, thank you for being part of the Koehn & Koehn Jewelers family.

Well that means quite a bit coming from someone whom I consider to be a hero. (I don’t know if that grammar is accurate…but you get what I mean.) Thanks, man!
