I don’t want to go too deep on this one…it is only a little pearl after all…but it’s a cute story that I’d like to share because I’m not sure even our cynical, easily offended world can find something wrong with it.
I stopped in the store briefly today to get a few odds-and-ends squared away before the 4th of July holiday, so I was in jeans, my Chuck Taylor’s and casual T-shirt. (Come to think of it I dress that way most days…but it wasn’t my best T…so I felt a little dressed down.)
We had an unexpected flurry of activity this morning which meant I needed to pitch in and help with the overflow. That’s actually one of my favorite things…a store full of chatty customers who are having a good time and aren’t shy about letting loose a little with the sales staff. Small business owner’s can attest to the fact that it’s one of the things that make what we do worthwhile. Shiny, happy people are a blast to be around…and it’s THE best when we can help them feel that way for a bit.
I stepped up to a cute older woman and her granddaughter and asked how I could help. The older woman took a folded white envelope out of her purse and said something like, “I have this little pearl and I would like to have it set into a pendant of some sort for my granddaughter.” She opened the envelope and out rolled a very small pearl…so small it was difficult to grasp with my fingers. She told me that she loved smoked oysters and years ago her husband was about to bite into one, but noticed this little pearl and she kept it because really…how often does that happen? (I’m pretty sure the answer to that is “Never.”)
Turns out her granddaughter will be celebrating her 19th birthday next week, and a pendant, set with this little pearl, was going to be her birthday present from here grandmother. We found a cute little double heart pendant that is somehow magically suited for what could be one of the rarest pearls in existence. Maybe not in the history of the world…but certainly in their world…and in their existence.
I write this post because it reminds yet again of how personal this business can be…and how honored we are to be a part of your lives. I got to hear that story…she got to share it…her granddaughter will wear it and share the story…and so it goes. An accidental pearl…found…protected…given…soon to be worn…and no doubt cherished in some way by the recipient. Who knows? Maybe one day her granddaughter will be saying, “See this pearl? I got it from your great grandmother…and you’ll never believe where she found it!”
Yep. I may have the best job in the world. As usual…thank you for letting us play a small part in your awesome lives.
